Dunga criticises Gauteng municipalities for failure to curb irregular expenditure

The Gauteng government has criticised municipalities in the province for failing to curb high levels of irregular expenditure, which stands in the billions of rands.

On Sunday, Gauteng treasury released the consolidated audit report for the province’s eleven municipalities with only two achieving clean audits for the 2024/2025 financial year.

For the year under review, Gauteng municipalities recorded a total of R14.4 billion in irregular expenditure.

Irregular expenditure refers to spending that is carried out in violation of approved municipal legislation.

Gauteng finance MEC Nkululeko Dunga says funds need to be channeled in the right way.

“Gauteng is not a poor province. This is a province with capital, and the auditor-general has found, again and again, that we are not channeling these resources effectively enough to deal with the challenges our people actually face. This is not a story about the absence of money. It is a story about the absence of discipline in how that money is spent.”
