Mecklenburg police in Limpopo, have arrested a 25-year-old foreign national for allegedly being in South Africa illegally after he was found accompanying a suspect who allegedly shot and killed two African men at a tavern in Ga-Selepe village in Sekhukhune District.
The suspected gunman remains on the run.
The shooting happened at about 7.30pm on Thursday.
Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said officers responded to reports of a shooting and found the two African men with multiple gunshot wounds.
“Both men were certified dead at the scene,” he said.
Ledwaba said preliminary investigations indicate the suspect arrived at the tavern in a vehicle accompanied by a 25-year-old foreign national.
“It is alleged that an altercation ensued between the suspect and the 33-year-old victim before the suspect produced a firearm and opened fire,” Ledwaba said.
During the shooting, the 45-year-old victim was also struck by gunfire and fatally wounded.
Police said the 33-year-old victim attempted to flee after being shot, but the suspect allegedly continued firing until he collapsed before fleeing the scene.
Ledwaba said the 25-year-old man who accompanied the suspect was arrested after police established that he was in South Africa illegally.
“He has since been charged with contravention of the Immigration Act.”
Acting Limpopo Police Commissioner Major General Jan Scheepers condemned the killings and directed that all available resources be mobilised to trace and arrest the suspect.
Mecklenburg police have opened two murder cases, and launched a manhunt for the unknown suspect.
Ledwaba said the motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
“Anyone with information that could assist in locating the suspect is urged to contact the investigating officer, Sgt Mashia Mokofane, on 076 224 4734, the Crime Stop number 08600 10111, the nearest police station, or submit information anonymously through the MySAPS app,” he said.
