Thursday’s weather: Cold, wet and windy in 4 provinces, with disruptive snow in Eastern Cape | News24

Severe thunderstorms and disruptive snow are expected in the Eastern Cape.

Very cold, wet and windy conditions are forecast in parts of the Free State, Northern Cape, North West and the Eastern Cape, according to the South African Weather Service (SAWS).

Severe thunderstorms and disruptive snow are also expected in the Eastern Cape.

Impact-based warnings

Yellow Level 1 warning: Severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours resulting in localised flooding of low-lying areas, roads and bridges as well as hail and damaging winds which will lead to damage to settlements and infrastructure over the central and eastern parts of the Eastern Cape, except in the extreme north-east.

Yellow Level 2 warning: Disruptive snow resulting in localised traffic disruption over the north-eastern parts of the Eastern Cape (near the Lesotho border).

Yellow Level 2 warning: Disruptive winds and waves resulting in localised damage to informal settlements/structures, difficult driving conditions for high-sided vehicles, localised difficulty in navigation of small vessels, disruption to ports/harbours and beach activities are expected between Cape Agulhas and Port Edward into Friday.

In the SAWS’s colour-coded weather warning system, yellow indicates a moderate risk of impact that requires caution and awareness, while orange indicates that a higher-risk impact is expected, requiring increased attention and preparation. The SAWS uses the numbers to indicate the likelihood of weather-based impacts occurring. Levels 2 and 6 are high, level 5 is medium, and levels 4 and 8 are low.
