Michael Mount Waldorf School learner Evra King says strong performances throughout the season, and belief in what he could contribute to a team, helped him earn provincial Gauteng colours and secure selection for the Gauteng U20 volleyball squad.
The Grade 11 learner is one of six Michael Mount athletes selected to represent Gauteng at the annual U20 Inter-Provincial Volleyball Tournament taking place at Wits Old Mutual Hall from July 7 to 10.
Reflecting on the season, Evra said some moments made him realise provincial selection was within reach.

“I had quite a few amazing performances with my club, Spike Crew Volleyball, and also our recent gold medal at the Fourways High School Tournament with our school.”
Evra explained that those experiences gave him confidence heading into provincial trials. “That gave me an idea of what I can bring to the Gauteng volleyball team, and I was quite confident that those were things I could do again at the provincial trials and really show that I’m needed in the team.”
Describing his style of play, Evra said he sees himself as more than a specialist in one area.
“I would definitely say that I’m an all-rounder. Although my position usually requires mainly strength in attacking and blocking, I bring a lot of defensive power to the team and a lot of stability. I also play with a lot of energy and passion on the court.”
His journey to provincial colours was not without setbacks. During the fourth training session of the provincial trials, Erva suffered a mild concussion, forcing him to step away from sport and daily activities for two weeks.
“I couldn’t study, I couldn’t work, I couldn’t train, I couldn’t do anything, and that was really difficult to go through. It’s been a tough road back, but I am getting there now, and I really appreciate all the training I can go to, and that I was still able to make it onto the final team.”
Evra credits Michael Mount’s volleyball programme and coaches with shaping both his approach to the sport and his mindset.

He joined the boys’ volleyball team in Grade 9 and said the experience changed how he viewed the game.
“My time with coach Andy Musa Mazibuko, and especially now with coach Kutso Mamabolo, has taught me the importance of the bond in a team. It showed me that volleyball doesn’t just have to be about power and hitting and being strong; it can really be about being connected with your team.”
Evra added that volleyball has taught him to trust himself, and understand that the value in a team extends beyond individual performances.
Looking ahead to the inter-provincial tournament, Evra is approaching the experience with a focus on growth.
“For this provincial tournament, it’s more of a learning experience. I want to go there, play my best, see what I can do, and use it as an idea for what I can do in future opportunities.”
