30 June protests: Gauteng law enforcement to conduct final assessment of deployments

Thousands of foreign nationals have already left South Africa in recent days, while police have repeatedly warned that any lawlessness or intimidation will not be tolerated.

The Gauteng Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure – made up of the South African Police Service (SAPS), State Security Agency, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and other law enforcement partners – will assess operational deployments before the day’s planned protest actions get underway.

The integrated operation will include metro police, Gauteng traffic police, the Department of Home Affairs, community policing forums, private security companies and other stakeholders.

Authorities said the operation is aimed at maintaining law and order, protecting the public and ensuring that any protests remain peaceful and within the law.

The briefing comes after police announced a massive security deployment across Gauteng, including thousands of officers, helicopters, drones and CCTV monitoring to respond to any incidents.
