Eastern Cape police on high alert ahead of June 30 protests

Eastern Cape police are on high alert ahead of next week’s planned march and shutdown.

Authorities say all eight districts have been activated and have warned they will act against any violence, criminality or intimidation.

The province’s Transport and Community Safety MEC Xolile Nqatha said SAPS has boosted deployments, with support from the SANDF, and has cautioned against vigilantism.

Eastern Cape Police top brass has warned that while the constitution guarantees the right to peaceful protest, only lawful demonstrations will be facilitated.

It said six Joint Operational Centres will be set up across districts to monitor developments and report to the provincial command centre.

The province has already seen protests targeting undocumented migrants in areas including Mdantsane, Mthatha and Komani earlier this year.

Nqatha is urging police to enforce the law without negotiation.

“If you need to retreat and call for a backup, do so. Don’t act like a film star. You’re not a film star.”

Nqatha has also urged community members and Community Policing Forums to report criminal activity and help dismantle networks driving lawlessness.
