Mbombela’s young chess minds put their strategies to the test on Saturday, May 30, when Edgeview Academy hosted its very first chess tournament.
The event drew players from across the Lowveld for a day of sharp moves, friendly rivalry and community spirit.
The tournament had three categories: U13, U18 and an open section.
Khwezi Bhembe took first place in the U13 category, Lwandle Nyambi scooped second and Tsebo Ngobeni got third place. The best girl in this category was Anina Steyn.
In the U18 category, Shabangu Melchizedek won gold, Baganda Nhlengethwa took second place and Rhulani Silinda took third. The best girl in this category was Franzelle Faul.
In the open section, Nqobani Ndimande won gold, Collen Shludhwa took silver, and Sidwell Maluka and Dumisa Nkosi shared bronze.

The school appreciated the support received from the Ehlanzeni Chess Communication Group, as well as Uplands and Penryn for contributing the necessary equipment.
The tournament director, Craig Valentine, ensured smooth pairings and fair play, while the arbiters, Eddie Bhila and Sibuseso Mhlongo, kept a close eye on every clock and move.
“This was our first tournament, and the level of sportsmanship and focus from the players was incredible,” said Valentine.

“We wanted families to feel welcome too, so having parents picnicking outside while the kids played created exactly the atmosphere we hoped for. We are already planning the next one.”
