Hosted at Meropa Casino by the Limpopo Department of Sport, Arts and Culture in partnership with the Africa Rising Music Conference (ARMC), the event focused on industry development, artist support and the growing influence of Lekompo music.
The dialogue placed particular emphasis on Lekompo, a genre that originated in Limpopo’s townships and rural communities and has grown into a significant force within South Africa’s music landscape. The genre has gained national popularity in recent years, generating millions of streams and creating opportunities for artists, producers and businesses linked to the music industry.
The event also recognised Limpopo-based nominees and winners at the Metro FM Music Awards, as well as artists and industry contributors who have played a role in the development of the genre.
A series of panel discussions addressed issues affecting musicians and creative entrepreneurs, including mental health, artist development, branding, music rights management and revenue collection.
Representatives from industry organisations including SAMPRA, SAMRO, CAPASSO and RiSA participated in discussions on royalties, publishing and neighbouring rights.
The wellness segment, presented in partnership with The Sound Mind, featured artist and pastor Mr Selwyn alongside other industry figures, focusing on mental health and sustainability in creative careers.
Among the speakers were HitBoss SA, regarded as one of the key contributors to the rise of Lekompo, and Nelo Mathenjwa of Paradise Worldwide Africa.
Thuso Majatau, a representative of ARMC and facilitator of the programme, said access to knowledge and industry infrastructure was essential for artists seeking long-term success.
“Today’s artists need more than talent alone. They need access to knowledge, networks and industry infrastructure. Limpopo has become one of the most exciting music regions in South Africa. This gathering is about ensuring that artists and entrepreneurs have the tools to turn creative success into long-term careers.”
Limpopo MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Funani Jerry Maseko, said the province had a responsibility to support its growing creative sector.
“Limpopo is producing some of the country’s most exciting talent. As a government, we have a responsibility not only to celebrate these achievements but to create pathways that allow artists and creatives to thrive.”
“The programme reflected the province’s commitment to supporting the creative economy and ensuring that local artists are positioned to benefit from the growth of South Africa’s music industry. We’re excited to collaborate with Africa Rising Music Conference on this important initiative and look forward to growing this platform in the years ahead.”
The event concluded with networking sessions and celebrations for Metro FM Music Awards nominees and winners from the province. Activities also included artist showcases and a public screening of a Bafana Bafana match.
Organisers said the initiative forms part of broader efforts to connect Limpopo’s creative community with national and international opportunities through partnerships with industry stakeholders.
