At least 29 schools have been damaged by heavy winds and rainfall in the Western Cape.

Three have had their roof sheets blown off by strong gusts on the west coast, said Western Cape education department spokesperson Bronagh Hammond.

“The department is assessing the damages and is in contact with the schools to determine their needs and make arrangements for continued teaching and learning,” Hammond said.

She added schools would open as planned on Tuesday for the start of the third term.

“The department has consulted with the South African Weather Service [SAWS] and provincial disaster management committee and can confirm that all schools will be open.

“Requests for closure, due to inaccessibility of roads, may be considered for individual schools, pending on damages caused by heavy rainfall overnight,” Hammond said.

She added the department would continue to monitor the situation.

According to SAWS, the next cold front with rain was expected to make landfall on Tuesday.

Between 10 and 20mm of rain was expected over the western parts of the province, and between 40 and 60mm could be expected over the south-western mountains, it said.
