Snow and rain threaten SA as SEVEN weather alerts take effect

Here’s the weather outlook for South Africa’s nine provinces.

The South African Weather Service has issued weather updates, informing the public that the combination of snow, heavy rain, flooding, very cold conditions and very rough seas can be expected.

SEVERE WEATHER ALERTS

IMPACT-BASED WARNINGS

A. Orange level 8 warning: Disruptive rainfall leading to flooding of roads and bridges, danger to life due to fast moving streams and rivers, and causing major roads to be closed is expected over the eastern parts of the Garden Route District Municipality in the Western Cape as well as Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, Koukamma, Kouga, and Sundays River Valley Local Municipalities in the Eastern Cape until Thursday.

B. Orange Level 5 Warning: Disruptive rainfall leading to danger to life, flooding and displacements of settlements as well as mudslides is expected over Buffalo City Metro, Makana, Ndlambe, Ngqushwa, Raymond Mhlaba Amahlathi, and Great Kei Local Municipalities in the Eastern Cape until Thursday.

C. Yellow Level 4 Warning: Disruptive rainfall leading to flooding of settlements, roads and bridges as well as susceptible areas is expected in places over the Swellendam Local Municipality, as well as the eastern parts of the Central Karoo and the western parts of the Garden Route District Municipalities in the Western Cape until Thursday

D. Yellow level 2 warning: Disruptive rainfall leading to localised flooding of roads and susceptible areas is expected over the extreme south-eastern parts of the Northern Cape province, Theewaterskloof and the Langeberg Local Municipalities in the Western Cape as well as the Dr Beyers Naude, Blue Crane Route , Enoch Mgijima, Intsika Yethu, Great Kei and Mnquma Local Municipalities in the Eastern Cape until Thursday.

E. Yellow Level 4 Warning: Wind and waves leading to difficulty in navigation at sea as well as small vessels taking on water is expected between Cape Point and Plettenberg Bay until Thursday.

F. Yellow Level 2 Warning: Damaging waves leading to small vessels at risk of taking on water and capsizing as well as difficulty in navigation is expected between Plettenberg Bay and East London until Thursday.

G. Yellow Level 2 Warning: Disruptive snow leading to icy roads resulting in traffic disruptions is expected over the northern high-lying areas in the Eastern Cape on Thursday.

FIRE DANGER WARNINGS

ADVISORIES

Very cold, wet, and windy conditions are expected over Free State, North West, the central and eastern interior of the Western Cape, southern parts of the Northern Cape, as well as most parts of the Eastern Cape. Light snowfall is expected over the high-lying areas of the Free State, Western Cape, Northern Cape as well as the Eastern Cape.

Gauteng

Gauteng can expect fine in the morning, otherwise partly cloudy and cool but warm in the extreme north.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index is Moderate

Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga, the Place of the Rising Sun, can expect partly cloudy and cool, but warm in the Lowveld.

Limpopo

In Limpopo, partly cloudy and cool, but warm in the east. It will be fine in the northern parts.

North West

North West, known as Bokone Bophirima in Setswana, can expect partly cloudy and cool with isolated showers and thunder- showers in the south-west. It will be windy in the western parts.

Free State

In the Free State, partly cloudy and cold to cool with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers in the west where it will be windy. It will become cloudy in the afternoon in the south.

Northern Cape

Morning fog is expected along the coast and adjacent interior, otherwise partly cloudy, windy and cold to cool with isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered in the south-east. No rainfall is expected in the north-eastern parts, but light snowfall is expected over the southern high-lying areas. The wind along the coast will be moderate north-westerly to westerly, becoming south-westerly from the afternoon.

Western Cape

Morning fog patches in the extreme north-western parts, otherwise cloudy, windy in places and cold to cool, with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers, but widespread in the south-eastern parts. Light snowfall is expected over the northern high-lying mountains. The wind along the coast will be strong to gale south-easterly.

The expected UVB sunburn index is Very High

Eastern Cape

The Western half: Cloudy and cool with widespread showers and thundershowers. The wind along the coast will be strong to near-gale south-easterly.

The Eastern half: Cloudy and cool with widespread showers and thundershowers but scattered in the extreme east. Snowfall is expected over the high-lying areas in the north-eastern parts. The wind along the coast will be light south-westerly in the morning, otherwise moderate to fresh easterly to north-easterly.

KwaZulu-Natal

Evening fog is expected in places over the interior, otherwise partly cloudy and cool, becoming cloudy with isolated showers and thundershowers in the south-east from late morning. It will be warm in the north-eastern parts. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate westerly to southwesterly in the morning, otherwise southerly to south-easterly, but northerly to north-easterly in the evening.
