An off-duty Gauteng Public Order Policing (POP) member and a civilian were shot dead on Monday night in Tsakane after an attack near a local supermarket involving three unknown men.
Police say the officer was off duty at the time of the incident.
Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the off-duty police officer was reportedly at a local supermarket when attacked by three unknown men who shot him dead.
“The suspects reportedly proceeded to another street around the corner and shot another victim inside his vehicle,” she said.
Nevhuhulwi said the motive for the shooting is unknown at this stage and police investigations are underway.
Gauteng provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni has expressed his condolences to the families, colleagues and friends of the Public Order Policing (POP) member and the civilian who were killed.
Mthombeni also expressed concern over the killing of the officer.
“An attack on a police officer is tantamount to an attack on the State.”
He said police will investigate and work to find those responsible.
“I have mobilised resources, working together with the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation to ensure that those who committed this barbaric act are brought to book.”
“We further appeal to our communities to work together with law enforcement, particularly the SAPS, to fight against crime,” Mthombeni said.
Police said criminal activity can be reported to the Crime Stop line at 08600 10111, or anonymously via the MySAPS app, which can be downloaded on any smartphone.
“All information received will be treated as strictly confidential,” Nevhuhulwi added.
