The Special investigation unit (SIU) is briefing the media on the investigation into the Free State Provincial Government Bursary Scheme, which focuses on alleged irregular, unauthorized and wasteful expenditure in connection with the disbursement of bursaries.
According to SIU spokesperson Selby Makgotho, the briefing will provide an update on the investigation conducted under Proclamation 123 of 2023.
Makgotho said the annual bursary scheme was aimed at helping financially disadvantaged students in the Free State access higher education in areas of scarce skills, while addressing the shortage of skilled professionals in the province.
He said the SIU investigation stems from the Office of the Prime Minister’s report on bursaries 2017/2018 and is investigating payments for travel, accommodation and allowances that were allegedly awarded in error or in breach of bursary policy.
”The SIU investigation is looking at student housing payments, causes of mismanagement and associated unauthorized or wasteful expenditure,” the spokesperson said. Makgotho.
The investigation further investigates any unlawful conduct by officials or other persons related to the administration of the scholarship scheme.
In addition, the SIU investigated the funds held in suspense accounts at higher education institutions and facilitated repayment when funds owed to the Prime Minister’s Office were identified.
The briefing will be led by acting head of the SIU, Leonard Lekgetho, and will be joined virtually by Free State Prime Minister Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae and Free State Director-General Dr. Molefinyana Phera.
“The publication of the report is an important milestone in the investigation and highlights the SIU’s commitment to transparency and informing the public,” Makgotho said.
