Eskom reconnects most WC districts after devastating storms

Eskom said crews are navigating waterlogged ground, fallen vegetation and inaccessible river crossings to conduct restoration work across the province.

In the Overberg, Riviersonderend farms, Stanford, Hemel-en-Aarde and Papiesvlei near Hermanus are expected to come online on Friday.

Several repairs across the West Coast, Cape Winelands and the Garden Route are expected to reconnect the affected areas next month.

Spokesperson Kyle Cookson said power will be restored in Gouna near Knysna by the end of the weekend.

“In the Overberg region, restoration efforts continue despite a setback caused by conductor theft on the Yamal and Outer Line. In the Garden Route and Oudtshoorn, we are working around limited access and in some cases carrying equipment by foot and planting poles by hand.”

Towns along the N2 between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, in an area called “Garden of Eden”, are expected to have power by 25 July.

In the West Coast, Algeria, Citrusdal farms and Du Pont are expected to be restored by 5 June, and Noordhoek farms by 12 June. In the Cape Winelands, Chavonnes and Badsberg farms are also set to be reconnected by 5 June, while repairs continue to the high-voltage line between Boskloof and Romansrivier.

The Garden Route, Askop and Buffelsnek, Brackenhill and Fisanthoek, Harkerville and Klein Bavaria are due back online by 25 June.
