Snowfall is possible from late Wednesday through to Saturday in South Africa and Lesotho as per the map with heavy snow currently indicated for parts of the Eastern Cape, KZN and Lesotho.
We have seen a substantial increase in the snow indicated and while this is still very much an advance forecast we wanted to provide a heads-up for local authorities, farmers and those travelling in these areas next week, IN CASE the forecast closer to the time is anything like this.
Snow is currently indicated around Beaufort West in the Western Cape next Wednesday, while snow in other regions is indicated from Thursday, into Friday and possible early on Saturday.
The heaviest snowfall period of currently indicated for Thursday, and should the forecast hold true it will likely cause significant travel complications as well as challenges for farmers in some areas marked on the map.
This is however very much an advance forecast and will almost certainly change so check back for updates.
Snow is indicated around Sutherland, Richmond, Nouport and other areas marked on the maps in the Northern Cape.
In the Eastern Cape significant low-level snow is currently indicated around places such Middelburg, Nieu-Bethesda, Graaff-Reinet, Cradock, Queenstown, Hogsback, Burgersdorp, Molteno, Jamestown, Dordrecht, Aliwal North, Barkly East, Rhodes, Lady Grey, Khowa (Elliot), Ugie, Maclear, Tlokoeng (Mount Fletcher) Matatiele and Cedarville as per the map. The possible heavy snowfall for this region is marked in purple on the map.
Low-level snow is on the radar for KwaZulu-Natal, including around Kokstad, Swartberg, Franklin, Creighton, Underberg, Himeville, Karkloof, Nottingham Road, Mooi River, Bergville, Newcastle, Van Reenen and lower down the slopes of the Drakensberg as per the map. Very low-level snowfall is currently indicated for the Southern Drakensberg towns and settlements.
The Free State is also showing up for possible snowfall around Harrismith, Warden, Memel and Clarens and with some snowfall in excess of 10cm indicated in purple.
Mpumalanga has snow indicated around Volksrust, Wakkerstroom, Daggakraal and further north around Ermelo, Carolina, Secunda, Kriel, Bethel, Lothair, Breyton, Arnot, Belfast, Middelburg and eMalahleni.
In Lesotho snow is currently indicated in the data for the high ground around Semonkong, Thaba-Tseka, Mokhotlong and Afriski. Heavy snowfall is currently indicated around Qacha’s Nek and in the east around Sani Pass.

The map indicates where we are seeing the possibility of snow, but it may not fall in all of the areas shown on the map.
