2027 WCED admissions: What parents need to know for Grade R, 1, and 8

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has announced that the outcomes for on-time admissions applications for Grade R, 1, and 8 for the 2027 school year will be available from Thursday, 28 May 2026. 

The department reassured parents not to panic if their child does not receive an offer immediately, as the initial release of results is just the start of the placement process.  Education MEC, David Maynier, acknowledged that seeing an unsuccessful outcome can be disappointing, but explained that “significant movement in placements” follows the initial release.

The ‘Double Parking’ Phenomenon

A key reason for initial disappointment is a temporary system overload, often referred to as “double parking.” Maynier noted that a substantial number of learners will receive offers from more than one school. Last year, over 40,000 learners had multiple successful outcomes, temporarily occupying places at various schools. This means a parent may initially see an unsuccessful application, but the place may be temporarily held by a learner who is simultaneously holding another offer elsewhere. As parents begin to confirm their choice, these held places are immediately freed up and offered to other applicants.

The WCED stressed that schools, not the department, determine the outcome of admissions based on their individual policies.

Important Actions for Parents

The admissions process remains active until all placements are finalised. Parents are urged to take the following actions:

• Confirm Offers Quickly: If you have received multiple offers, please accept one school as soon as possible. This action is critical for freeing up spaces for other learners waiting for placement. The deadline for confirming choices is 15 June 2026.
• Stay Engaged and Update Contact Details: If your child has not yet been placed, remain engaged with the schools you applied to and ensure all your contact details are correct, as schools will contact parents directly when spaces become available.
• Be Patient: Many learners who are initially unsuccessful do receive placement shortly afterwards

2027 School Admissions Timeline

Parents should note the following key dates for the remainder of the admissions process:

• 28 May 2026: System displays the outcomes of Grade R, 1, and 8 applications.
• 15 June 2026: Deadline for parents to accept and confirm placement offers.
• 15 – 27 June 2026: Schools contact parents to fill newly available spaces.
• 27 June – 20 July 2026: School holidays, during which school activity pauses.
• 20 July – Mid-August 2026: Schools finalise enrolment lists for 2027.
• Mid-August 2026: The WCED assists parents with any outstanding placements.
