ANC replaces Gauteng and Eastern Cape leadership structures with provincial task teams

The African National Congress (ANC) says its structures remain functioning in Gauteng, the Eastern Cape and across the country, despite moves to replace provincial executive committees with provincial task teams following the expiry of their terms.

Speaking during a media briefing on Friday after a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula said the organisational changes were routine and in line with the ANC Constitution.

He said the party was operating normally across all provinces, including Gauteng and the Eastern Cape, despite internal organisational adjustments.

“The ANC is functioning well in the Eastern Cape, in Gauteng, or anywhere else,” he said.

Mbalula said the NEC had approved the “regularisation of organisational business” in both provinces through the establishment of provincial task teams, after provincial executive committees’ terms expired without provincial conferences being held.

“The National Executive Committee has, in line with the Constitution of the ANC, approved the regularisation of organisational business in these two provinces through the establishment of provincial task teams in the place of provincial executive committees whose terms have expired without a provincial conference having been held,” he said.

He stressed that this was a normal organisational procedure within the party.

“This is the normal course of business of our movement in such circumstances. It is exactly what the Constitution of the ANC provides for,” he said.

Mbalula said the changes would not affect governance in the provinces.

“The governance of these provinces is not affected by these organisational matters of the movement. The work of the state continues,” he said.

He confirmed that the National Working Committee (NWC) would finalise the composition of the provincial task teams on Monday, beginning with Gauteng.

“The National Working Committee will on Monday consider the compositions of the two provincial task teams,” he said.

He said Gauteng’s provincial structure would be reconstituted after its term expired, while the Eastern Cape structure was not being disbanded but similarly required renewal.

“The Eastern Cape is not disbanded. Its term lapsed,” he said.

Mbalula said the NEC had mandated the officials and NWC to finalise the composition of both task teams, which would be announced in the coming week.
