Gauteng traffic cop accused of raping woman in his apartment block, released on bail

A Gauteng traffic official accused of raping a woman who lives in his apartment block has been released on R3,000 bail.

The 36-year-old officer, who cannot be named until he pleads, appeared in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday morning.

He is accused of raping a woman 10 years younger.

NPA spokesperson in Gauteng, Lumka Mahanjana, said the rape allegedly took place on April 13, 2026.

She said it is alleged that in the early hours of the morning the accused met the complainant on the fourth-floor staircase of their apartment building in Arcadia, where they smoked together.

“Afterwards, the accused allegedly persuaded the complainant not to return to her apartment but instead to accompany him to the top floor of the building to continue their conversation,” Mahanjana said.

She said that upon reaching the top floor, an altercation allegedly ensued between the two.

“The accused allegedly pinned the complainant against a wall and inserted his fingers underneath her skirt and into her vagina.”

Mahanajana said the woman allegedly pushed the accused away, causing him to fall several stairs.

“It is further alleged that as the complainant attempted to flee, the accused stood up, grabbed her, pinned her against the wall, and raped her.”

“After the incident, the complainant reportedly ran back to her apartment and locked the door.”

Mahanjana said the matter was reported to the police on April 23, 2026, and the officer was arrested the following day at his residence.

During the bail proceedings, the State did not oppose bail, as the accused was not considered a flight risk, she said.

However, the court granted the accused bail of R3,000, and the matter was postponed to July 15, 2026, for further investigations.
