A single vehicle accident has claimed the lives of two police officers in Witbank, Mpumalanga.
The officers attached to the Tactical Response Team (TRT) were part of those deployed in KwaZulu-Natal, working on the Emanguzi task team tackling cross-border crime.
Police said the pair was on duty when the incident occurred on Tuesday evening.
“The members were travelling to Pretoria on Tuesday evening, 05 May 2026, to testify in cases before the court when the State vehicle they were travelling in reportedly lost control, resulting in the fatal crash,” explained police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe.
She added that the acting Police Commissioner has since reached out to the families of the fallen officers.
“The acting National Commissioner of SAPS [South African Police Service], Lieutenant General Dimpane, has extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased members.”
