Seven people have been killed and several others injured after a horrific collision between a minibus taxi and a bus on a busy Eastern Cape route on Monday morning, in what authorities describe as a devastating road crash now under investigation.
Transport department spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said the crash happened around 6 am when a fully loaded minibus taxi carrying workers from KwaNobuhle towards town allegedly attempted a U-turn directly in front of an oncoming Algoa Bus, which had only the driver on board at the time.
The impact struck the passenger side of the taxi, leaving a scene of destruction and chaos along the roadway.
“A total of 18 people were attended to on the scene. Two sustained serious injuries, while others suffered varying degrees of injuries and were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment,” Binqose said.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, where paramedics worked to stabilise the injured before transporting them for urgent care.
Authorities have since opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash, with questions now focusing on how the manoeuvre was made in the path of oncoming traffic.
