Six Limpopo mourners have died and dozens more fell seriously ill after eating food served at a funeral in Mmotong-wa-Bogobe village, outside Polokwane in Limpopo on Saturday.
According to Giyani View, the victims started experiencing symptoms such as diarrhoea and severe headaches, prompting a rush to nearby hospitals.
The local publication said at least 74 people were admitted to hospital in Lebowakgomo, while additional patients sought treatment at clinics in Ga-Maja and Chuene.
Meanwhile, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) reported that a seven-year-old girl was among the victims.”
Polokwane municipal ward councillor Jacob Ntlemo told the broadcaster that some of the community members have been discharged from hospital.
“…six people died, two are from here in Ga Maja, one from Ga Mashashane, three from Seshego. That is what I know. Those who were admitted yesterday and started feeling better were discharged,” Ntlemo was quoted saying.
In another separate matter, a 45-year-old woman in Hartswater in the Northern Cape died after consuming a plate of warm chips offered by an unknown man.
Rebecca Bosman was found in a shack in the town on February 25, 2026.
Two individuals who reportedly ate the same food fell ill and were taken to hospital, where they received treatment.
At this stage, the cause of death remains unclear. Community members initially suspected poisoning. An autopsy has been conducted, but the final results are still pending and will form part of the ongoing investigation.
The Hartswater detective unit has officially opened an inquest into Bosman’s death while investigations continue.
