South Africans can expect a mixed bag of weather this Friday, 17 April 2026, with widespread showers and thunderstorms over the central interior, while the Western Cape braces for colder, wetter, and windier conditions.
A band of unstable weather stretches across the heart of the country, bringing a 60% chance of rain to much of the Free State, North West, and central interior of the Northern Cape.
These areas fall under a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms, with the risk of heavy downpours, hail, damaging winds, and localized flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and along roads and bridges.
Gauteng will see cloudy and cool conditions with a 60% chance of showers and thundershowers, creating a damp and occasionally stormy day across the province. Similar conditions extend into the North West and Free State, where scattered storms are expected to develop through the afternoon.
Further north, Limpopo and Mpumalanga will experience partly cloudy skies with a 30% chance of showers and thundershowers, although the Highveld of Mpumalanga may see more frequent activity. The far northern parts of Limpopo are likely to remain mostly dry.
In the Northern Cape, conditions vary widely. While the central and eastern parts carry a 30 to 60% chance of showers and storms, the northwestern interior is expected to stay dry. Cold conditions are forecast in the far west, accompanied by strong coastal winds.
The Western Cape will be one of the wettest regions, with widespread rainfall and an 80 percent chance of rain over the southwestern parts, including Cape Town. Expect cloudy skies, cool to cold temperatures, and strong winds along the coast, especially later in the day.
Along the Eastern Cape, a 30% chance of showers is expected in many areas, increasing to 60% along the south coast and adjacent interior. The northern parts of the province also face scattered thunderstorms.
KwaZulu-Natal will remain warm to hot, particularly in the northeast, with a 30% chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms. Hot and humid conditions along the north coast may become uncomfortable, especially as winds pick up later in the day.
In addition to the rain, fire danger remains extremely high in parts of the Northern Cape, specifically in areas such as Ubuntu, Emthanjeni, and Dawid Kruiper, where dry and windy conditions persist.
Overall, Friday brings a classic autumn contrast: stormy and unsettled across the central interior, cold and wet in the southwest, and warm and humid along the eastern coastline.
