Mtontsasa police in the Eastern Cape have arrested a 35-year-old male suspect from the Hlabathi area for pulling out a knife, and demanded sex from a 20-year-old woman, who was on her way to visit her boyfriend, and later raped her.
The incident took place on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at about 6.30.pm
Eastern Cape police spokesperson Captain Welile Matyolo said the victim was walking to visit her boyfriend in the Gqibelana area when she encountered an unknown man.
“The suspect produced an Okapi knife, demanded sex, and proceeded to rape her.”
Matyolo said during the assault, the victim pretended to be submissive.
“The suspect dropped the knife while raping her. She seized the opportunity, picked up the knife, and stabbed him twice in the neck.”
The suspect then fled the scene.
However, Preliminary investigations led police to the nearest hospital, where relevant information linking the suspect to the crime scene was obtained.
“The 35-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at about 6.50.am. Bloodstained clothing was found hidden under a bed in his room.”
Matyolo said the suspect had two stab wounds to the neck.
“The Okapi knife was later recovered at the crime scene.”
The suspect is expected to appear before the Lusikisiki Magistrates Court on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, on a charge of rape.
Meanwhile, the OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana, commended the Mtontsasa police for their swift action in apprehending the suspect and the victim for her bravery and composure in such a life-threatening situation.
