A 40-year-old man has been arrested in Limpopo following the interception of a vehicle allegedly linked to the distribution of illicit cigarettes in the province.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, members of the Provincial Flying Squad were on duty when they received intelligence information about a white Toyota Corolla with Gauteng registration plates.
The vehicle was believed to be involved in the distribution of illicit Remington Gold cigarettes within the Westernburg, Seshego, and Polokwane policing areas.
A lookout operation was immediately activated, and the vehicle was traced and intercepted on the R37 road en route to Lebowakgomo.
Upon stopping and searching the vehicle, police discovered a consignment of illicit Remington Gold cigarettes with an estimated value of R50,000.
Ledwaba said, “Members of the Provincial Flying Squad acted swiftly on intelligence information and intercepted the vehicle on the R37 road.”
During questioning at the scene, the driver reportedly confirmed that he was responsible for delivering the illicit cigarettes within the area.
He further indicated that he is a Zimbabwean national and was found to be in the country illegally.
Ledwaba further stated, “The suspect was taken into custody after it was confirmed that he was in possession of illicit cigarettes and was also in contravention of the Immigration Act.”
The suspect is expected to appear before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
