Barberton Mines hosted a networking session at The Capital Mbombela on Thursday, March 26.
The aim of the event was to share information about mine’s community development programmes and matters related to persistent illegal mining within its operational areas.
Development initiatives aim to improve the lives of community members through infrastructural investments, skills development, investment in education and the development of small and medium enterprises.
A panel of managers shared presentations and discussed topics of the day. Chesten Gaffley, group security manager at Pan African Resources, said the company is taking multiple steps and co-ordinating with the relevant authorities to combat illegal mining.

He acknowledged the challenges posed by the mine’s proximity to a nature reserve, which allows zama zamas to gain access.

Despite this, Gaffley said the company has ensured that security within the Barberton Mines premises is robust, which has enabled the arrests of illegal miners inside the property.
