Young talent takes center stage during Free State Motor Mech debut – Bloemfontein Courant

The Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA) Motor Mech competition will take place in the Free State on May 1, 2026 at the Martie Du Plessis School.

The competition will form part of the Cars in the Park event, organized annually by the OFS Veteran Car Club, which will provide a unique platform where young talent, industry leaders and car enthusiasts come together.

Motor Mech’s participation adds a dynamic new dimension to the event, combining heritage motoring with the future of the automotive industry.

According to Dewald Ranft, National Chairman of MIWA, the competition not only highlights the skills of tomorrow’s engineers, but also reinforces the importance of developing the next generation to support the South African automotive sector. “The competition gives students hands-on exposure to real workshop environments, allowing them to develop and demonstrate technical expertise, problem-solving skills and a passion for the craft,” Ranft said.

For years, the Motor Mech competition has played a crucial role in identifying and encouraging emerging engineering skills among school students across South Africa.

The future of the automotive aftermarket will be defined by young talent, and on May 1, the Free State will see that future first-hand.
