New Eastern Cape Health MEC Ntandokazi Capa paid a surprise visit to East London’s Frere Hospital on Monday evening after complaints that pregnant women had been sleeping on the floor and benches due to a shortage of beds.

Capa said the maternity ward needed 18 midwives because vacancies had not been filled for years.

She met with the hospital’s management as well as senior officials from the health department’s provincial office.
