‘Deliver a clean audit’: Malema to Dunga as Gauteng finance MEC

EFF leader Julius Malema has commended the party’s Gauteng chairperson Nkululeko Dunga after his appointment as finance MEC in the province.

The appointment was made by Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi during a cabinet reshuffle. Dunga replaced the ANC’s Lebogang Maile, who has been reassigned to the education and sports portfolio. The move officially marks the EFF’s inclusion in the Gauteng provincial government of unity (GPU).

Taking to X, Malema expressed full confidence in Dunga’s ability to manage the provincial purse and maintain a clean record.

“Politics is about patience and perseverance; your mandate is a clean audit and financial stability for the Gauteng province,” Malema said. “Congratulations Dunga, in you we trust.”

Dunga thanked Malema for his guidance and reaffirmed his commitment to the task .

“We remain firm in your continued guidance and the mandate given to us by the mighty EFF,” Dunga said. “We internalise this directive and shall, with discipline and precision, heed the call of the revolution as mandated, president.”

EFF spokesperson Sinawo Thambo said: “The EFF firmly believes in his leadership capabilities and ability to work within a collective while safeguarding and advancing the political programme of the EFF.

“We are confident that as MEC for finance he will advance a people-centered fiscal agenda that prioritises service delivery, economic justice and equality.”

Dunga transitions to the provincial legislature with a background in local government. He previously served as EFF caucus leader in the city of Ekurhuleni, where he also held roles as chairperson of the municipal public accounts committee and MMC for finance.

Thambo highlighted key achievements from Dunga’s tenure in Ekurhuleni, including:

  • Leading the insourcing of security guards and cleaners.
  • Launching the “Siyacima Manje Namhlanje” campaign, a credit control measure targeting industries and government departments with outstanding debts which recovered R350m in revenue.
  • Overseeing a significant increase in the municipality’s cash-on-hand, which rose from R350m to about R2.1bn.
