Gauteng women win thriller; Western Cape men end 14-year wait at South Africa National Softball Championships – World Baseball Softball Confederation

The 2026 Softball South Africa National Provincial Championship (NPC) concluded in Kempton Park, Johannesburg, delivering four days of high-intensity competition as Gauteng claimed the women’s title and Western Cape ended a 14-year drought in the men’s division.

Held shortly after Human Rights Day, the tournament highlighted Softball South Africa’s commitment to equality, unity, diversity and dignity, both on and off the field.

A key development in this year’s championship was the introduction of an under-35 age limit across both divisions.

The regulation reflects a strategic focus on accelerating the development of younger athletes and positioning the NPC as a platform for emerging talent. The quality of play throughout the event suggested a promising future for South African softball under this new framework.

Gauteng edge Western Cape in women’s final thriller

Gauteng defeated defending champions Western Cape 9–8 in a dramatic women’s final, sealing the title in a contest that remained undecided until the final out.

University Sport South Africa (USSA) secured third place, completing a strong campaign that underlined the growing impact of student athletes in the national softball landscape.

The women’s competition featured six teams — Gauteng, Western Cape, USSA, North West, Limpopo and Free State — competing through a round-robin stage followed by knockout rounds. The diversity of participants reflected ongoing efforts to expand the women’s game across all nine provinces.

Western Cape men capture historic title

In the men’s final, Western Cape defeated USSA 9–7 to claim their first NPC title in 14 years.

USSA pushed strongly throughout the contest, but Western Cape’s composure proved decisive in a tightly contested game marked by multiple momentum swings before the Cape side secured victory in the closing innings.

Gauteng finished third, rounding out the podium after a consistent performance across the tournament.
