Easter pilgrimage boosts Moria street vendors as thousands flood Limpopo

Street vendors in Moria City in Limpopo said the Easter pilgrimage has injected much-needed life into their businesses, with thousands of churchgoers spending on goods and supplies.

Traders along the R71 describe the weekend as critical to their survival, saying religious gatherings like this drive a significant boost in informal trade.

The annual Easter gathering is expected to conclude on Sunday.

Just metres from the main place of worship, a steady flow of pilgrims is translating into real business for informal traders lining the streets.

Vendors said the influx has brought a surge in sales, with many reporting a sharp increase in demand for food, crafts and everyday essentials.

Michael Sekgobe, who has been selling handmade crafts and avocados here since 2017, said this weekend could make or break his month.

He expects to sell out his stock before the day ends as the Easter rush reaches its peak.

“Business is going well even with the church service underway. On a normal day, sales are slow but we’re expecting tomorrow to be much better and the remaining stock you see here will be sold out,” said Sekgobe.

The province is projected to generate at least 100 million rand this year, doubling last year’s 50 million rand return.
