Alberton and Bassonia JKA Karate dominate at prestigious Gauteng Championships | Southern Courier

Karatekas once again proved themselves among the very best karate competitors in the province.

The Gauteng Championships are regarded as one of the most prestigious karate events in the country and are the second largest tournament in South Africa, surpassed only by the SAJKA National Karate Championships.

This year’s event attracted more than 3 000 competition entries, bringing together top karateka from across Gauteng in a highly competitive environment.

After months of dedicated preparation, the team delivered an exceptional result, finishing with the highest overall medal tally in Gauteng for the fourth consecutive year.

The team achieved an incredible overall result of 132 medals, including 47 gold, 37 silver, and 48 bronze.

In addition to the medal winners, the team recorded 45 Top 8 finishes, with those competitors qualifying for the South African Championships, further strengthening Alberton and Bassonia JKA’s representation at the national level.

Instructors praised the students’ dedication and perseverance in preparing for such a demanding tournament. Competitors spent months refining their kata and kumite skills, demonstrating the discipline and commitment required to compete successfully at this level.

“The Gauteng Championships are always extremely competitive,” said a spokesperson. “To once again achieve the highest medal count in the province is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our students, the support of their families, and the commitment of our instructors.

“We now look ahead to the SAJKA National Karate Championships in May, where the national team will be selected to represent Japan Karate Association South Africa at the JKA Indo Pacific Cup in Mauritius this September, an international event expected to host competitors from nearly 30 countries. Historically, we have had strong representation in the national team, and we are hopeful of continuing that tradition this year.”
