The former acting head of the Mpumalanga Department of Education, Jabulani Nkosi, was identified as a key figure in a tender scheme case where the department was defrauded of R113 million.
Nkosi appeared before the Mbombela Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday alongside 31 co-accused in the fraud matter.
The state said Nkosi signed off on the emergency tender, which was meant for repairs at 21 schools.

The prosecution beleives that without his signature, the tender would not have been awarded.
“If anything, the fraud as well as the money laundering, the PMFA as well as failing to report in terms of the State has more sufficient evidence against accused number 1,” said State prosecutor Prenisha Jagganath.
