The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow Level 4 warning for disruptive rain that could cause localised flooding across the Lowveld of Mpumalanga and Limpopo, while extreme heatwave conditions threaten the Western Cape, Northern Cape and parts of the Eastern Cape.
Temperatures are expected to soar to extreme levels in parts of the Western Cape, with Vredendal and Oudtshoorn forecast to reach 40°C, and Springbok in the Northern Cape hitting 38°C.
Impact-based warning
A yellow Level 4 warning has been issued for the Lowveld of Mpumalanga and Limpopo, where localised flooding is expected to affect susceptible roads, settlements, low-lying areas and bridges.
In the SAWS’ colour-coded weather warning system, yellow indicates a moderate risk of impact that requires caution and awareness, while orange indicates that a higher-risk impact is expected, requiring increased attention and preparation. The SAWS uses the numbers to indicate the likelihood of weather-based impacts occurring. Levels 2 and 6 are high, and Level 4 is low.
Advisories
Persistently high temperatures are expected over the western parts of the Namakwa District, west, south-west and northern parts of the Western Cape, and the Koukamma Municipality in the Eastern Cape. Heatwave conditions will also affect Sarah Baartman, Chris Hani, Alfred Nzo, OR Tambo, Amathole, Nelson Mandela Bay and Buffalo City in places until Monday.
