Gauteng still grappling with persistent cash-in-transit heists

The latest crime statistics for Gauteng show that cash-in-transit heists remain a persistent problem. 

Provincial commissioner Tommy Mthombeni delivered the third quarter statistics in a Gauteng Legislature sitting on Thursday.

According to statistics, 13 cash-in-transit heists were recorded in the province during the third quarter, five more than in the same period in the previous year.

This is despite police intensifying intelligence-driven operations to combat a surge in CIT heists.

Mthombeni said while there has been a rise in cases, there have also been arrests.

“Yesterday, somewhere in Tshwane in the early hours of the morning, we had a CIT. With the follow-through of crime intelligence, we managed to get one person who was in the hospital, and when we were doing scientific investigation, we realised that he is also linked with other cases.”
