The opening gala, overseen by the Mpumalanga Province Swimming Federation, brought together around 130 qualifying swimmers from across the province, including competitors from Nelspruit, White River, Komatipoort, Secunda, Piet Retief and eMalahleni.
Young athletes delivered a mix of personal best performances and confident first-time provincial races, creating a competitive and energetic atmosphere throughout the day. Strong local participation from Middelburg schools added to the excitement, with home swimmers lining up against some of Mpumalanga’s top age-group talent. The event forms part of the selection process for the Mpumalanga schools swimming team and the upcoming SA Schools Swimming Championships later this year.
Organisers praised the hosting in Middelburg, with support from the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality contributing to a well-prepared venue and smooth-running programme.
With the trials now underway, attention turns to the remaining events as Mpumalanga’s swimmers continue their push toward national competition.
