Double shooting: Husband allegedly kills wife, then himself in Burgersfort, Limpopo

Police in Limpopo are investigating cases of murder and inquest after a 54-year-old man allegedly shot and killed his wife, 27, before shooting himself near Twin City Mall in Burgersfort on Sunday, February 8, 2026.

Authorities were called to a shooting at approximately 1.54pm along Dirk Winterbach Street, next to the mall. On arrival, officers found the couple lying on the passageway with gunshot wounds. Both were transported to a local hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the woman was standing on the passageway when a blue Audi sedan with Gauteng registration allegedly stopped next to her. “The driver reportedly exited the vehicle, approached the woman, shot her, and thereafter shot himself,” police said.

The motive for the incident is currently unknown, although domestic-related issues cannot be ruled out.

During the processing of the crime scene, police recovered a pistol and empty cartridges. A search of the suspect’s vehicle also yielded one rifle, 21 live 9mm rounds, and 18 live rifle rounds. Preliminary investigations indicate that the firearms and ammunition belonged to the suspect. Authorities are continuing to establish how he came into possession of them.

The blue Audi sedan used in the shooting was confiscated and will form part of the ongoing investigation. Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
