In the past couple of years, specifically since 2021, the overall ongoing neglect and misappropriation of funds, and the absence of sound water resource planning and management of decades past have led to Gauteng’s water infrastructure being in a dilapidated state, creeping closer to a possible localised collapse, with the public facing the ever-present threat of “day zero”.

The province is facing a very high risk of water insecurity, with consumers experiencing either low flow or dry taps due to water shortages and/or prolonged outages.
