The athletic community mourns the passing of former deputy president of Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA), George Lamb, who died on February 4.
At the time os his passing, he also served as chairperson of Brooks Athletics Club.
Lamb’s remarkable journey in athletics began in 1985, the same year he completed his first Comrades Marathon.
His passion, discipline, and endurance saw him complete 10 consecutive Comrades Marathons, earning the prestigious Comrades Marathon Green Number. This is a remarkable achievement reflecting consistency and commitment at the highest level.

He later went on to complete a further 13 Comrades Marathons as a referee, ultimately earning two Comrades Marathon Green Numbers, a rare honour within the athletics fraternity.
CGA general manager Mandla Radebe said over the course of his running career, Lamb completed 89 ultramarathons across various provinces in South Africa, as well as 184 standard marathons, cementing his legacy as a true icon of long-distance running.
“He proudly carried CGA race number 852, a symbol well known and respected within road running circles.
“Lamb’s service to athletics administration began in 1989 when he joined Central Gauteng Athletics as a member of the Road Running Commission. He was later elected Chairperson of the Commission, playing a pivotal role in strengthening road running structures within the province,” said Radebe.
In 1994, Lamb was elected deputy president of Central Gauteng Athletics, a position he held with dedication until 2022.
Through this role, he contributed significantly to the governance, development, and advancement of athletics in the region.
“The late Lamb was more than an administrator and athlete; he was a mentor, a leader, and a custodian of the values of athletics,” said Radebe.

“His wealth of experience, steady leadership, and unwavering passion for the sport earned him immense respect across clubs, provinces, and national structures.
“Central Gauteng Athletics pays tribute and celebrates the life of Lamb for his outstanding contribution to athletics.
“On behalf of the CGA Board, clubs, athletes, coaches, officials, and the wider athletics community, Central Gauteng Athletics extends its heartfelt condolences to the Lamb family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.”
