Mpumalanga Paralympian off to Dubai Para Athletics Grand Prix | Mpumalanga News

The Mpumalanga Paralympian, Collen Mahlalela, will represent South Africa at the Dubai 2026 World Para Athletics Grand Prix, which kicks off on Tuesday, February 10.

The athlete, who hails from eMasibekela in Nkomazi, qualified for the Grand Prix last year at the World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi, India.

He delivered a blistering run in the men’s 400m T47 final, racing to third place in his personal best of 48.04 seconds. With his performance, Mahlalela won a second bronze medal for South Africa at the championships.

The world’s best para athletes will compete across nine cities and this year marks the 13th season of the World Para Athletics Grand Prix.

Mahlalela said he is aiming for gold and hopes to beat his personal best time again. This much-anticipated competition will shape his career as he could qualify for the Commonwealth Games.

He is currently preparing with his personal trainer, Olympic champion runner Caster Semenya. Originally from Limpopo, she is a winner of two Olympic gold medals and three World Championships in the women’s 800m.

“I am preparing through consistent training and by competing in races within the Athletics Gauteng North League to maintain peak performance.”

During this interview, Mahlalela referenced Mpumalanga, saying: “My success will not only benefit me, but will also uplift our province and create opportunities for others. I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to Inkosi Mlambo II for supporting me from the very beginning of my journey until now, as well as to the Bambanani Mlambo Trust for their continued support.”
