VAALPARK – An exciting three-way play-off between Judd Sundelson (23), Leonard Swart and Juan Zander Coetzee set the stage for an epic final of the Free State Open 2026.
On Sunday, January 18, Sundelson’s dream became a reality on the lush greens and fairways of Heron Banks Golf Club as he was crowned Free State Golf Champion for 2026.
Sundelson (274:67-67-70-70) finished 10 under par, tied with Swart (274:68-71-66-69) and Coetzee (274:71-63-71-69). The 18th hole became the center of attention as the three-way playoff culminated in a two-way showdown that Sundelson ultimately won.
Sundelson, who won the prestigious Order of Merit at St. Andrews last year, is no stranger to the winners’ podium, but this win was especially sentimental because he dedicated it to his late grandfather, who taught him to play golf.

In other news, Free State Golf President Butch Lombard said goodbye to Heron Banks Golf Club and the Free State Open. He will step down as president later this month. According to Robert Lance, Director of Golf at Heron Banks, Lombard’s contributions and dedication to Free State Golf and Heron Banks will never be forgotten.
