Beyond the badge: Northern Cape cop’s quiet act of kindness uplifts four vulnerable children

A Northern Cape police sergeant has been praised for demonstrating compassion and community spirit after donating food, clothing, toys and snacks to four vulnerable children from her neighbourhood.

Saps spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thabo Litabe said the initiative was led by Sergeant Lillian Moroka, who is attached to the Provincial Firearms, Liquor and Second-Hand Goods Unit. Litabe said Moroka identified the children earlier this year while travelling home from work and was moved by their circumstances.

“Sergeant Lillian Moroka identified the children earlier this year while travelling home from work and resolved to save money over time in order to assist them,” Litabe said.

According to Litabe, Moroka initially planned to hand over the donations before Christmas, but the effort was delayed after she learned that the children were visiting their grandmother at the time.

She later re-engaged with the parents and, together with colleagues, delivered the items on Wednesday.

“Earlier today, Sergeant Moroka re-engaged with the parents and, together with her colleagues, delivered the donated items to the children,” Litabe said.

The children were described as visibly excited and appreciative when they received the food parcels, clothing, toys and snacks. Litabe added that Moroka expressed her gratitude to her colleagues for supporting the initiative and singled out Mrs Lisa Graaff for making a financial contribution to ensure its success.

The Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, also commended the act of kindness, particularly during the festive season.

“Such gestures reflect the caring and humane side of the South African Police Service and strengthen relations between the police and the communities they serve,” Litabe said.
