South African Human Rights Commission’s chairperson, Chris Nissen, has urged authorities in the Eastern Cape government to implement sustainable food security programmes to prevent more people from dying of hunger.

Nissen was speaking over a virtual platform during the commission’s imbizo (gathering) on the right to food at the East London International Convention Centre on Tuesday.

In 2022, the commission conducted an Eastern Cape inquiry into child malnutrition and the right to food after more than 100 children in the province died due to acute malnutrition.
