Residents and visitors in various parts of the Western Cape are being urged to prepare for extreme heat as the South African Weather Service has issued a ‘very hot and uncomfortable’ weather advisory, warning that temperatures could climb into the mid to high 30s, reports Cape {town} Etc.
According to the advisory, the affected areas include sections of the West Coast and Cape Winelands districts in the Western Cape, as well as the Kamiesberg municipality in the Northern Cape.
The alert came into effect from 8am on Monday, 24 November, and remains in place until 8pm this evening.
‘Daytime temperatures are expected to reach the mid to high 30s,’ warned SAWS. ‘Such weather conditions can have significant health impacts, so it is essential to take necessary precautions to protect yourself.’
Of these health impacts, SAWS cautioned against hyperthermia and heat stroke:
‘When the temperature is extremely high, humans’ ability to cool their bodies through sweating is reduced. This can be a real threat that may lead to hyperthermia,’ the weather service advised.
‘In an extremely hot environment, the most serious health and safety concern is heat stroke. Heat stroke can be fatal if medical attention is not available immediately.’
Residents are urged to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, stay hydrated and look out for vulnerable individuals, including the elderly and young children.
