UFS students share “betrayal” over provisional registration agreement

QWAQWA – Some students at the University of the Free State say they feel betrayed by the interim agreement reached by the university’s administration and student leaders.

UFS and the SRC reached an agreement on the provisional registration on Wednesday evening.

The institution agreed to phase out the controversial system over the next two years.

UFS has also obtained a preliminary injunction prohibiting individuals from engaging in unlawful activities or conduct on any of its campuses.

The order applies to all UFS campuses: Bloemfontein, Zuid and Qwaqwa and remains in force pending the final decision of the case.

Nkosihona Malinga-Mnisi from eNCA spoke to some UFS students, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of victimization.

One student said, “I feel betrayed because during these mass gatherings that we have held, we as students and SRC have been one.”

“Right now they agree with management when they said they would disagree. They said they would come up with a solution that would benefit everyone. At this point I don’t feel like all students will benefit from this.”

“I feel betrayed, like they are not on our side as they claim.”

Another said: “There was communication, but not with us. They only communicated but did not talk to us. It is clearly a betrayal.”
