Three suspects with 18 ‘stolen’ cattle arrested on the way to free state auction

Three suspects were arrested on Wednesday with 18 stolen cattle in the free state.

Members of the Bloemfontein Flying Squad received information about a truck that transported stolen cattle on the N8 Highway, traveling from Bot Shabelo to Bloemfontein.

The team quickly found a Mercedes-Benz truck that matched the description and pulled it over.

“When searching for the vehicle, officers discovered 18 cattle suspected of being stolen. The three passengers of the truck of 64, 25 and 24 were also searched,” said police spokesman Sgt Mahlomola Kareli.

The police seized a 9mm Glock gun, which was later stolen in Ladybrand in 2024.

“Further investigation by the sharing theft unit revealed that the cattle was stolen in a neighboring country and were reportedly transported to an auction for sale.”

The suspects also appeared to be in possession of false certificates for removing cattle. They are expected to appear in court soon.
