JOHANNESBURG – In the final by-elections before 29 May, the African National Congress (ANC) has retained Madibeng’s ward one in the North West.
The ward councillor position became vacant in March this year following the death of Mamoeketsi Kgautle after a short illness.
In Wednesday’s by-election, the ANC’s candidate, Maphatha Nkoe, received 70% of the votes.
That’s more than 13% than what his predecessor got in 2021.
Elections analyst Wayne Sussman said this was a promising showing for the ANC in one of its stronghold provinces.
“It shows particularly in the Bojanala district, the platinum belt of the North West, the ANC is absolutely resolute, the ANC is incredibly strong. Last night’s result put an exclamation mark of how strong the ANC is in this part of the North West and they will hope a result like this they will be able to replicate not just in the North West but across the whole country.”
