Training was disrupted in the municipality of Thabo Mofutsanaya District, Free State, when hundreds of South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) members took to the streets on Thursday.
Sadtu demands that Lindiwe Mabaso, the district director, decreases and says that their relationship has been irreparably demolished. They say that a litany of grievances that was raised in 2022 was not tackled.
The Memorandum of seven pages focuses on department officials, claims poor management, a “lack of leadership” and a dysfunctional Human Resources department. The trade union also claims that Sadtu clients are the target and “bashing of the trade union continues”.
“Filling posts is a challenge due to rigid interest by the district director and officials,” is the memo.
Bricks Moloi, provincial secretary of Sadtu, said there were currently 70 empty posts. (Groundup was unable to verify this and other claims, because Howard Ndaba, spokesperson for the free state of education, did not respond to us.)
“The working conditions in which our members work are not healthy. In some schools you will find that there is no water and that they should use dirty toilets … But if you go to the district office, you notice that they are correct at 10 am because they do not have any water, but we have to work under the same circumstances.”
“If we don’t get any positive answers within 14 days, we will invite all teachers in the province for a strike,” he said.
Tsoarelo Malakoane, the provincial department head, received the memorandum on behalf of the MEC.
“I will hand it over to the MEC and certainly escalate to the prime minister,” he said.
