The cardiologists and the cardiac catheterization Laboratory Laboratory (Cathlab) team of Life Rosepark Hospital have again written history by being the first to perform advanced clot removal procedures with the help of the Penumbra Trombectomy system for acute heart and lung patients. This marks the third pioneering milestone of heart technology that the cardiologists of the hospital have reached within a few months.

On July 29, 2025, Dr. Marius Oosthuysen and the Cathlab team successfully the first acute coronary embolus thrombectomy of the Free State with the help of the Penumbra device, in which a life-threatening clot was removed from a wreath artery to restore the critical blood flow.

In the early morning hours of July 30, Dr. Thabiso Litelu, cardiologist, the first acute pulmonary embolism thrombectomy of the hospital with the same device, which removed dangerous clots from pulmonary arteries and the heart and lung function is improved. Dr. Litelu carried out a second successful pulmonary embolism removal on 1 August.

These latest procedures follow two other pioneering heart interventions earlier in July 2025, both scoops for Life Rospark and the region. Together these three performance emphasizes the dedication of the hospital within a month to bring the latest and most effective cardiac technologies for patients in Midden -Zuid -Africa.

The Penumbra thrombectomy system removes mechanical blood clots with the help of continuous vacuum suction via a catheter, offers a safer, minimal invasive alternative to clotting-evading drugs and reducing bleeding risks.

“This month was exceptional for our cardiologists and the Cathlab team,” said Hein Rossouw, hospital manager. “Their expertise and dedication when taking over these advanced technologies for the first time in the free state means that our patients get the best possible care, closer to home.”
