JOHANNESBURG – Illegal mining continues to pose a serious threat to South Africa’s economy and communities.

It’s an entrenched crisis that also threatens the formal mining sector.

The arrests of over 500 zama zamas in Barberton has once again highlighted the scale of the problem.

Mining expert, David Van Wyk argues that the issue of illegal mining can not be solved if authorities does not deal with the syndicates that hire people to go underground illegally.
