The Gauteng Agriculture Department says that it will make the vaccination of animals to its priority, because foot and mouth disease will spread throughout the country.

Gauteng has been reported at least 32 active cases of foot and mouth disease.

Agriculture MEC Vuyiswa Ramogopa says they have received at least 100 doses of vaccinations. She addressed the media in Johannesburg.

“One hundred and thirty (135) doses, which we have already received, we all administered them, so our vaccination program has been quite extensive, and we managed to manage all the doses vaccine that we have received. The disease was first detected on 11 April in Kwazulu-Natal, with further outbreaks later confirmed in Mpumalanga and Gauteng and recently in the free state.

In Mpumalanga the first things were recorded on a farm in the Dr. Pixley Ka Isaka Seme Local Community and in a slaughterhouse in the Dipaleseng local municipality in June.

Many local farmers have expressed concern about the impact of the disease on cattle, productivity, food security and income.

In the light of this, the Ministry of Agriculture will organize a high-level national foot and mouth disease. The two-day Indaba, which takes place on Monday and Tuesday at the ARC-VIMP campus in Rooderplaat, comes in response to ongoing FMD outbreaks in various provinces.
