When 21-year-old footballer Mohau Nkota signed a three-year contract with Saudi Arabian club Al Ettifaq, he marked a personal milestone, as well as making history for the Northern Cape – the province of his birth.
Hailing from Galeshewe in Kimberley, Nkota’s journey from township fields to the international stage has sparked widespread pride across the province.
Following an eye-catching debut season with Orlando Pirates and impressive outings in the CAF Champions League, Nkota now joins one of the Saudi Pro League’s top teams, where he will soon be sharing the field with global icons like Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema.
Northern Cape MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Mangaliso Matika, was among the first to celebrate the news, calling Nkota’s achievement “a defining moment for the Northern Cape.”
“Mohau’s story is one of perseverance, talent, and inspiration,” the MEC said in a statement. “He is a beacon of hope for all our young athletes, proving that greatness can emerge from our communities when hard work meets opportunity.”
Nkota has made history too, as he becomes the first player from the Northern Cape to transition directly from the DStv Premiership to an elite overseas league, a rare feat that underscores not just his determination, but the untapped sporting potential within the province.
The MEC used the moment to rally young athletes and dreamers across the Northern Cape to stay focused and aim high.
“To Mohau, I say: Your journey sends a powerful message to every young person in the Northern Cape – that your dreams are valid, and your background is no barrier to success. Keep chasing, keep believing, and keep inspiring,” said Matika.
The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing local talent and supporting the next generation of skilled young players emerging from communities across the province.
